I have learnt the fact that us, international students can be divided into three categories.
The networking ones, the lucky ones and the unlucky ones. The chances of landing into a job, as soon as possible, depends on the category of students you will fall under. These students comprise of about 90% of the population. Of course, remaining 10% do their math, apply early, get a call by pure hard work and convert it into a full time. Kudos to them!
Lets analyze the categories one by one
Students who fall under networking category start their work as soon as they reach here. They start to network, find contacts(to their luck most of their school/college seniors are here), get an on-campus job/internship purely through networking. This skill is very important if you want to be successful in the United States. Without this skill, it is very difficult to accomplish anything here. By using the same skill, they obtain full time as well. For this category, getting a job is not a piece of cake, they have to network with thousands before they land a job.
The lucky ones, gets things done very easily. They know someone very powerful in the company. So with minimum difficulty, they get a job. Of course, these students work hard to create an impressive resume. But the level of rigorousness this category takes in job search is less compared to the others.
Coming to the final category, the unlucky ones. Students in this category, DO NOT NETWORK (Either they don't want to or they are too "shy" to open their mouth and talk to people). So they lose their chance to be in the first category (which they do not care mostly). Also, these people do not have any powerful references to get them a job with minimal difficulty. (this part, frustrates the unlucky ones, like crazy!!). All they do is forward their resume to the near and dear ones and ask them to forward it to others, which, in most cases is a lost resume!
The thing which most annoys this category students are the free advice's which they get everyday, every week, for the rest of their lives, until they get a job! (therula pora varavan elam advice panuvan). In the middle of all this hustle, the only consolation these students get is a daily call from a consultancy offering food, stipend and a place to stay for training :P. Most of the students are hesitant to take this opportunity and wait a reasonable amount of time before joining consultancies.
Overall, getting a Job in the United States is not impossible, With right amount of hard work, right amount of networking and a small dash of luck should do the magic.
For those who are already in a job, congratulations and best of luck for your future. For people who are still searching, Don't lose hope and keep applying :)
